With summer on the horizon, many are anticipating a season of vacations, camps, and plenty of outdoor recreation. However, the lingering presence of COVID-19 has some considering other options for safety’s sake. The city of Greensboro has taken cues from the CDC and state, settling on a virtual side to summer: Greensboro Summer Online.
What is Greensboro Summer Online?
Greensboro Summer Online serves as a virtual alternative to previously scheduled summer programming, if feasible. It’s a joint initiative helmed by three Greensboro city arms: Greensboro Parks and Recreation, Creative Greensboro, and the Department of Libraries and Museums.
An online hub of sorts, Greensboro Summer Online offers interactive and innovative online activities that seek to substitute for in-person programs. Library services, ranging from summer reading to storytimes, have found a new home on the online space. And that’s not all. Virtual theatre, fishing contests, and youth programs will also find a place on the platform.
Why Greensboro Summer Online?
After careful consideration, the city of Greensboro opted for Greensboro Summer Online instead of face-to-face programming. The city landed on this decision due to the complications posed by COVID-19—and the city’s perceived inability to effectively heed recommended guidelines.
As it stands now, Greensboro Summer Online seeks to replace most previously scheduled camps and activities, including Summer Night Lights, ENERGY at the Park, and more. City facilities will resume operations on pace with current reopening policies. Outdoor venues, including neighborhood parks, golf courses, and trails, are expected to remain open to the public.
