Things to Do: Watch Holiday Movies at The Carolina Theatre

Holiday Movies at The Carolina Theatre

We’ve packed up our spiderwebs and skeletons and replaced them with cornucopias and gourds. And as soon as we pack up the last of those Thanksgiving leftovers into the fridge, we’ll pull out our winter string lights. If you can’t wait until the holiday season starts, let us give you a hint of what you can look forward to when it arrives! Get ready for some cool, cool fun when you watch holiday movies at The Carolina Theatre, starting on Nov. 28.

About The Carolina Theatre

Before we dig into the schedule, we’ll tell you a bit more about The Carolina Theatre! Its very first show took place on scary spectacular date: Oct. 31, 1927! Back then, though, it served as a vaudeville theater.

Silent films, live performers, and even newsreels have all appeared on center stage at this venue. Called “The Showplace of the Carolinas,” it brought a whole lot of renown and attention to our town.

Though it encountered a bit of a hiccup in the 1960s, movies did not kill this vaudeville star. Instead, after hard work and revitalization efforts, the theatre evolved, complete with a 1977 reopening. Of course, it couldn’t have done that without the $550,000 contributed by the United Arts Council.

Even a fire in 1981 couldn’t defeat this local treasure. Once again, the United Arts Council organized efforts to save the landmark—this time, with the $5 million they gathered in a fundraising campaign.

Thanks to their efforts—and the contributions of individual citizens—the theatre still welcomes folks to this day. Recently, it has performed shows like “The Wizard of Oz” and played films like “Rear Window.” Now, they’re gearing up to show a slate of winter movies!
